John's Story

John Cumicek works out nearly every day. He swims. He runs. He’s active and feels good at his age of 73 years. He’s also always been diligent about his health and attends all of his medical appointments.

It was because of his diligence to his health, that he was surprised when he received an elevated result concerning his prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level.

“My urologist prescribed medication to bring my PSA down. We took another test. But the number was still high, so she took a biopsy. A few days later, my doctor called me and told me I had prostate cancer. I was shocked. There’s no history of cancer in my family,” said John.

Due to John being over the age of 70, he didn’t have prostate surgery. Instead he was referred to the HSHS St. Vincent Hospital Cancer Centers where he saw a radiation oncologist who prescribed 39 radiation treatments from the middle of June through the beginning of August during the summer of 2016.

“I tried to stay positive. My initial thought was, ‘Let’s get it over with, so I can run the Bellin Run,’” remembers John.

John is one of 20 people who are known as “Bellin Legends.” These individuals have participated in every Bellin Run since it began. John wanted to run in the 2016 race to maintain his status.

“I started radiation and completed the 40th Bellin Run without any ill effect,” said John.

“The doctors and staff at HSHS St. Vincent Hospital Cancer Centers did an excellent job of explaining things to me. My nurse navigator was fantastic. My cancer team worked with me to schedule my treatments around the important events in my life. At my last appointment, they gave me a cup that said, ‘Rad Grad,’” said John.

Today, John is finished with treatment and continues to be a loyal runner.

“I’m glad I’m done with radiation, and I’m happy my PSA is down. But, I do miss seeing the people who took care of me through it all.”
